LUIS TOMAS VILLAGRAN (CAN)

Movement defines me and running makes it happen. Running on a trail or a road, absorbing my surroundings, dancing around obstacles: people, rocks, roots or trees. This is my passion… Feeling the air entering my lungs with each breath. My heart beating to the rhythm dictated by the road, the trail or the steepness of a climb. Experiencing that oneness with the place I’m running in. Sharing the possibility of reaching that state of euphoria that only running provides me. From the local 5K to the more demanding ultras, you can find me enjoying the moment doing what I love.

 ANNE BOUCHARD (CAN)

I’m a very passionate runner, I started to run at the age of 38, after giving birth to my second child. Since then, running has become my morning meditation that leads my day with happiness. I divide my time between my professional career as a tax director at Cirque du Soleil and my kids, so waking up every morning before sunrise and taking the trail  to the top of the hill near my house has become a privilege of life. I consider running an opportunity to explore myself and become a better person in all my different roles.

I’m proud of every start line I have crossed but more specifically:

Balancing a family, a career and an active lifestyle is a daily challenge, especially in this world which seems to run at light speed and where certain human values are eclipsed. I see myself as a modest ambassador of these values. As a father, engineer and ultra-marathoner, I try to use each stride to embody the intensity, emotion and authenticity of this quest for a better society. I look forward to running with you all!

I’m not sure if that’s possible, but I will give everything I have to find out

NOTABLE RACE ACHIEVEMENTS:

  • The Ultra-Trail Harricana 2015, 125 km: 1st

DAVID SAVARD-GAGNON

I’ve been running ever since I was a kid. I hated taking the bus to school. When I started running, I challenged myself to get to school before the bus. I beat that bus many, many times! I ran my first marathon at 16. After 19 marathons, I decided to plunge into a new adventure: ultra-trail running and eventually the 125-km race at Harricana. I’m from Baie-Saint-Paul, and the locals call us runners “wolves.” It feels completely natural to take on this challenge on my turf, and I hope to do the pack proud!

NOTABLE RACE ACHIEVEMENTS:

  • Niagara Falls Marathon 2016: 1st
  • Rock ‘n Roll Oasis Montreal Marathon 2013: 1st
  • Rock ‘n Roll Oasis Montreal Marathon 2014 and 2015: 2nd

Relearn to live in symbiosis with nature

A text from Mylène Gauthier, Distances+

Symbiosis is a Greek word combining the meanings together and live. Symbiosis is an intimate, lasting association between two different organisms or species. The word is heavy with meaning for Steven Guilbeault, ecologist and this year’s honorary president of The Ultra-Trail® Harricana of Canada.

“In a society like ours where we’ve lost contact with nature and feel like we’re living outside of it, we need to relearn that we are part of the ecosystem. We can’t hope for prosperous development in our societies if we get there at the expense of living conditions on Earth. We have to learn how to live in symbiosis again.”

Steven Guilbeault, young wolf of the forest

Born in 1970 in La Tuque, in the Haute-Mauricie region, Steven once climbed a tree in the wooded area behind his home and would not come down, in an effort to stop a real estate developer from cutting down the forest. “La Tuque is a small town in the middle of nowhere. I was grew up in touch with nature. The forest began right behind my house. That really shaped my life learning. I played in the forest when I was young and I think that has stayed with me, within me, and it strongly influenced my path afterwards.”

Steven Guilbeault-Fanny Lasselin-2

Educating and spreading awareness: a never-ending ultra-marathon

Ecologist, speaker and writer, Steven also co-founded Équiterre, the leading environmental organization in Quebec. He then worked for Greenpeace Canada for 10 years. In 2008, he returned to Équiterre as the new director and spokesperson. Like a never-ending ultra-marathon, he has pursued his quest to advance the thinking on climate change for the past 25 years. “This is the issue that consumes me. I went to the first international conference on climate change in 1995. I was also at the Paris Accord in 2015. It’s my subject; it’s what I’ve always been doing. It’s what I spend all my time working on.”

Healthy mind, healthy body, healthy planet

His love for nature is also evident in the outdoor sports he does. A bike courier during his studies, he still gets around on two wheels, in summer and in winter. He’s a hard-core hiker and also skied quite a bit when he was younger. He runs and particularly enjoys obstacle races. “My favourite place to run in Montréal is on Mount Royal. I’ve done road marathons before, but I’ve never run a trail race.” Steven will be at the starting line of the UTHC for his first trail-running experience. He’s excited about the race and is sure he’ll get hooked on the sport. “I already do a lot of hiking. In fact, I just got back from the GR20 in Corsica. I imagine I’ll love trail running!”

“Personally, physical activity is just part of life. I run four or five times a week.” His mantra encompasses the values of overall well-being: a healthy mind in a healthy body in a healthy world, along with being active and nourishing ourselves on a planet where life if good. “Physical activity is a great way to become aware of the importance of air quality, of preserving our natural spaces and of taking action to save nature.”

Experiencing an authentic trail run in the boreal forest. Running on paths in the heart of pure, wild nature. Passing through a rich ecosystem in a protected UNESCO nature reserve. We have no doubt that our honorary president will be in perfect symbiosis at the 2017 Ultra Trail® Harricana.

The Trail Runners Are Coming to Charlevoix

The Trail Runners Are Coming to Charlevoix

Montréal, August 15, 2017 – This is a race you won’t want to miss. Some 1,400 runners will attack the backcountry trails of Charlevoix in the sixth edition of The Ultra-Trail Harricana of Canada (UTHC), presented by The North Face, on September 8 and 9.

One of the largest trail-running races in the country and the only Canadian trail race in the international Ultra-Trail World Tour, the UTHC promises intense competition in the heart of the boreal forest.

A new 42-kilometre race will join the other six distances this year. The new course balances speed and technicality, and is perfect for runners who are ramping up their distance in trail running. Only 200 runners will take part in this inaugural marathon distance.

The crown jewel of all the distances is unquestionably the 125-km race (4,000 metres of positive elevation) that will pit several headlining trail runners against each other. While most participants are Canadian, the UTHC’s growing reputation is attracting an increasing number of international competitors, from countries such as the United States, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Japan, Portugal, Peru and Chile.

A battle of the titans is taking shape between 2015 winner David Jeker and Florent Bouguin, winner of the 65-km race in 2013 and the 80-km race in 2014. Bouguin is only missing the top podium step for the 125. This duel will be exciting to watch! The rest of the competition will also be fierce, involving 175 runners, including the impressive Vivien Laporte of France who is among the favourites.

Eyes will also be on Annie Jean, who will be defending her title for the 65-km distance among the women. Her athletic skills set her in a class apart.

The 125-km event is also a qualifying race for the prestigious Western States 100 and the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB).

In symbiosis

The theme of the sixth UTHC is “In Symbiosis.” It reminds everyone involved—athletes, volunteers and organizers—of the importance of experiencing and respecting nature, of being aware of the cycle of life. Trail running is a way of reconnecting with our wild roots and finding the “wolf” within each of us.

Besides the athletic challenge, the UTHC is also a trail-running party, bringing together the vast community of trail runners in Quebec. There will be exhibitors onsite, and attendees can again expect the family-friendly, fun, festive atmosphere the event is known for.

Where: Mont Grand-Fonds ski centre
1000 chemin des Loisirs, La Malbaie
When: September 8 and 9, 2017

Interviews can be scheduled with President/Co-founder Sébastien Côté and Executive Director Marline Côté.

About The Ultra-trail Harricana of Canada

It offers runners breathtaking views of Charlevoix’s backcountry and a healthy physical challenge. The race is part of the Ultra-Trail World Tour, a family of legendary races around the world that athletes dream of participating in. Many runners in Quebec have taken to using the UTHC slogans on social media (#jesuisloup, #freeyourwild).
